Memory loss increased by stress for people with diabetes. – Mon, 22 Feb 2010 [Article from Diabetes.co.uk]
According to recent diabetes news, stress increase the risk of memory loss amongst people with diabetes . The research found that high levels of a stress hormone gave greater insight into the brain function of diabetics . Links between a higher incidence of memory problems and diabetes have been often been observed.
Stress hormone Cortisol in high levels could slow down brain function amongst people with diabetes, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh. To reach their conclusion, the team looked at some 1,066 men and women aged between 60 and 75, all of whom were suffering from type 2 diabetes .
Dr. Reynolds, who led the study, reportedly commented: “We know that type 2 diabetes is linked to problems with memory, but the reason behind this is unclear. This study shows that older people with diabetes who have higher levels of stress hormones in their blood are more likely to have experienced cognitive decline. It may be that by regulating cortisol levels, we could help improve cognitive decline in patients with type 2 diabetes .” The findings were published in Diabetes Care .
